Abstract:
On the shores of a glacial lake in the heart of the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, Irene and Gary built their lives, raising two children who are now adults. But after thirty years of a lackluster life, Gary is determined to build on a desolate island the cabin he has always dreamed of. Irene resolves to accompany him despite the inexplicable headaches that assail her and leave her no respite. Drawn in spite of herself into her husband's obsession, she sees him gradually bogged down in this disproportionate project. Their daughter Rhoda, all her own dreams of family life, becomes the witness of the face-to-face of her parents, while an early and violent winter is announced which will make the islet even more inaccessible.
After Sukkwan Island, crowned by the Prix Médicis 2010, David Vann's second novel is a masterful work on love and loneliness. Désolations confirms the infinite talent of its author to explore the weaknesses and the truths of the human soul.
