Edgar Roy, un tueur en série présumé détenu dans une prison fédérale de haute sécurité imprenable, attend son procès. Sa condamnation semble inéluctable. Sean King et Michelle Maxwell sont sollicités par l'avocat de Roy — Ted Bergin, ancien mentor et ami de longue date de Sean — pour travailler sur l'affaire. Mais leur enquête est stoppée net avant même de commencer : alors qu'ils se rendent à leur premier rendez-vous avec Bergin, ils découvrent que celui-ci a été assassiné. Il leur incombe désormais de poser les questions que personne ne semble vouloir aborder : Roy est-il un tueur ? Qui a assassiné Bergin ? Avec l'aide d'alliés inattendus, ils poursuivent leurs investigations. Cependant, plus ils creusent le passé de Roy, plus ils se heurtent à des obstacles, des demi-vérités, des impasses, des faux amis et des menaces croissantes venant de toutes parts.
